Hillary Kent is an interior designer based in Baja California Sur, México, with a presence in Mexico City, Miami and New York. She holds a BFA in Interior Design from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. Hillary launched her career under the mentorship of Victoria Hagan, a distinguished member of the Architectural Digest Top 100 designers, where she mastered the art of luxury residential design through projects spanning the United States and the Caribbean. She later held executive roles at prominent textile and furniture companies within the hospitality industry, collaborating with leading hotel brands and renowned designers globally. With over a decade of experience apprenticing under visionary home product designers and artists, Hillary possesses extensive knowledge in manufacturing, sourcing quality materials, and cultivating artisans worldwide — expertise that is integral to her design projects. Her sophisticated yet eclectic interiors are inspired by her passion for travel, having explored over 26 countries, and her experiences living on both the east and west coasts of the USA. Since making México her home after a life-changing vacation to Baja in 2020, she has never looked back. In 2021, Hillary founded MERCANTIL, a brand dedicated to sourcing the finest local Mexican artisans and craftsmen for her projects. Her portfolio includes five-star luxury resorts, boutique hotels, wellness spas, and residential properties across Latin America and the USA. To date, she has created over 4,000 unique pieces of furnishing, each reflecting her distinctive style and commitment to quality.
Hillary’s training joins two traditions that rarely meet: the rigor of East Coast residential luxury and the material culture of Baja California Sur. That combination shapes every project. Interiors are built from things you can name — terracotta, hand-thrown ceramics, Otomí embroidery, woven accents, timber and stone — rather than trends. The studio designs, sources and produces under one roof, so intent survives from first concept to final install.
Most of what fills a Hillary Kent project is made, not bought. Through MERCANTIL, the studio works directly with Mexican artisan workshops to design and produce custom furniture, lighting and textiles — shorter supply chains, honest materials, and pieces that carry the hand of their maker. It is what lets a hotel or a home feel genuinely of its place.
